National Donate Life Month

April is National Donate Life Month, a time to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation. More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and the majority need a kidney. Many patients wait 3–5 years but living donation can significantly reduce that time.

Kidney failure (ESRD) is often caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. While dialysis helps sustain life, it replaces only a small portion of normal kidney function. A kidney transplant, especially from a living donor, can improve survival, enhance quality of life, and reduce time spent on dialysis.

Living donors must be 18 or older, in good health, and complete a thorough medical evaluation. One donated kidney can give someone the chance to live a longer, healthier life.

Caring for the Whole You

Kidney care is more than lab results and medications; it’s about how you feel emotionally and mentally, too. This month, we’re focusing on emotional well-being, stress management, and the importance of support at every stage of kidney care.

For Nephrology Patients:

Receiving a kidney diagnosis or managing chronic kidney disease can feel overwhelming. Stress, worry, or frustration are common, especially when lifestyle changes are needed. Learning healthy coping strategies and talking openly with your care team can help you feel more confident and supported.

For Dialysis Patients:

Dialysis can take both a physical and emotional toll. Feelings of fatigue, burnout, or mood changes are common and important to acknowledge. Staying connected with loved ones, your care team, and support resources can make a meaningful difference in day-to-day well-being.

For Transplant Patients:

After a transplant, emotions can be mixed — relief, gratitude, anxiety, or fear of rejection. Adjusting to a “new normal” takes time. Paying attention to mental health, asking questions, and reaching out for support helps protect both emotional health and your transplanted kidney.

💙 Remember: Caring for your mental health is part of caring for your kidneys. You don’t have to do this alone — your care team is here to support the whole you.

Words of Encouragment

Never underestimate your impact; every effort you make to care for your health counts.
