New Year, Healthy Kidneys: Start With the Basics
A new year is a great time to refocus on the simple habits that help protect your kidneys and support your overall health. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been managing kidney disease for years, going back to the basics can make a big difference.
What Do Your Kidneys Do?
Your kidneys work around the clock to keep your body in balance. They:
- Filter waste and toxins from your blood
- Remove extra fluid to prevent swelling
- Balance important minerals like potassium, sodium, and phosphorus
- Help control blood pressure
- Support red blood cell production and bone health
When your kidneys aren’t working as well, waste and fluids can build up, making daily care and monitoring especially important.
Back to Basics: Everyday Kidney Care
Starting the year strong doesn’t mean making big changes all at once. Focus on these core habits:
- Take medications as prescribed. Your medications help protect kidney function and manage blood pressure and lab levels.
- Watch your sodium (salt) intake. Too much salt can raise blood pressure and cause fluid retention.
- Stay hydrated. The right amount of fluids depends on your kidney condition. Ask your care team what’s right for you.
- Keep routine appointments and lab work. Regular checkups help catch changes early and guide your treatment.
- Avoid over-the-counter pain medications (NSAIDs). Some pain relievers can harm your kidneys. Always check with your provider first.
A Healthy Kidney Goal for January
Choose one small habit to focus on this month, like reading food labels, using a pill organizer, or checking your blood pressure at home. Small steps add up over time.
